It happens to the best of us: We either forget to apply our sunscreen, or we apply it (yay!), but then we forget to re-apply (Nooooo!)

So when those occasional burns happen, here are some tips to care for your skin to minimize pain and irritation:

Get out of the sun

Here’s an obvious one! You are definitely going to want to limit your exposure to the sun immediately after getting a sunburn. Get inside if you can! Then while your sunburn heals, protect the affected area with loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, or sun-protective clothing. Sun exposure can further damage the skin and delay healing.

Cool the affected area

Apply a cold compress to cool down the sunburned skin and reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid using ice directly on the skin, as it may cause further damage.

Hydrate

Sunburns can dehydrate your body, and adequate hydration supports the healing process.

Stay moisturized

Apply a moisturizer or after-sun lotion to help prevent excessive dryness and peeling. Look for products that contain ingredients like aloe vera or vitamin E and lidocaine. Avoid products that contain alcohol, as they can be drying.

Avoid irritants

During the first 24-48 hours, it’s important to avoid further irritating the sunburned skin. Avoid tight clothing, rough fabrics, or anything that can rub against or further inflame the affected area.
